A bi-dimensional fitting strategy is used to fit the invariant mass and lifetime distributions of dimuon pairs. The second set of methods revolves around fitting peaks from resonances, in this case the J/Psi meson. Methods involving inverting tagging variables and use of multiple tagging algorithms are used to determine the b-tagging efficiency and purity directly from the data. The presence of muons inside jets is also used to discriminate between heavy flavor and light flavor jets. These particles travel a measurable distance before decaying, leading to charged particle tracks that point to a distinct decay vertex.
b-tagging relies primarily on the long lifetime of hadrons containing a b-quark (B hadrons). The first is b-jet tagging, a method used throughout high-energy physics. Several methods are used to identify jets coming from fragmentation of heavy quarks. For the moment, we focus on the first observation of this new probe, which will become useful for precise measurements in the future. Eventually, measurements of boosted top quarks will serve as a chronometer of the QGP by scanning thru different lifetimes of the top quark.
However, the b quarks produced in its decay do suffer quenching. 3) Top quark measurements: The top quark decays too rapidly to interact with the quark-gluon plasma. Here the goal is to compare the nuclear modification of the jet spectra with inclusive jets, and also to study the dependence on the jet R parameter. 2) Measurements of b-tagged jets: The flavor dependence of jet quenching can be directly tested by identifying jets initiated by b-quarks. The corresponding measurement in heavy ions (currently being finalized) shows how the jet quenching play role in quarkonia phenomenology, which had not been recognized. The measurement of the fragmentation of jets containing J/Psi gives additional insight into the production dynamics, specifically by demonstrating that a large component of J/Psi are produced inside parton showers. However, despite decades of study, its production is poorly understood. The discovery of the J/Psi was one of the key pieces of evidence for the parton model. The J/Psi is a bound state of a charm and anti-charm quarks. For example, the mass of the quark is thought to have an impact on the extent to which collisional processes dominate with respect to energy loss via gluon bremmstrahlung.This objective is pursued via three types of measurements:1) Measurement of the fragmentation of jets containing a J/Psi meson. This dependence provides insight into the dynamics of parton energy loss. The main objective is to explore how jet quenching depends on the flavor of the parton that initiates the jet. By examining the radiation pattern of such «quenched« jets, we learn both about QCD radiation, as well as about the properties of deconfined matter, as it existed in the early Universe. Hard scattered partons (quarks and gluons) suffer energy loss as they traverse the QGP.
